Six key interview questions for exporters

The export professional role can often take the form of a business within a business as export is about developing new markets, distribution channels, and products that fit the requirements of overseas markets. If that was not enough, business can be conducted in a foreign language with due regard for the cultural preferences of the particular market you are developing.

The employer is often looking to the export professional for guidance in a whole range of areas for which the candidate may possess specific knowledge.

So, tell them why you are right for the job and how you can help them by considering the following questions:

How do you plan your work? Think about how the department may be set up, how much autonomy will you be allowed to have if you travel overseas for work. How will you access the resources you need while in the market?

What are your priorities for this role? Are you being asked to carry out a situation analysis drawing on your experience to come up with a budgeted plan addressing key areas that need attention for example any market research that is needed which leads to the implementation of the most effective plans for product and market development?

What do you think about our organisation? Make sure you look at the employer’s website, study the products, be able to quote or refer to it. You have an opportunity at this point to show your knowledge of the company’s position in these markets, it’s strengths and weaknesses and options for fully capitalising on them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

What do you think we could do better? With this type of question you are being assessed as a potential ambassador so they are keen to ensure you represent them in the best light. Your honest answer, assuming you have thoroughly researched the company may point to perceived weaknesses in their company they want to know about and address before launching a product into a new market.

Are you willing to travel? Jobs in export almost always require some travel. One week in four is not unusual and you should be able to demonstrate experience of this or leave the interviewer in no doubt that you are committed to overseas travel and see it as an essential part of being effective in the role. Quote examples.

Why are you leaving your current role? It is always best to be neutral about your current employer and concentrate on the positives you are looking for in a new role. Change of direction, career development, location, using all your skills to their fullest potential are all good reasons to look for a new opportunity.

What will you bring to the role and the company? Think about your skills and what you have to offer: market experience, second language proficiency, product management, knowledge of the distribution network and/or competitors in a particular territory, industry knowledge and so on. The employer will want to gauge how quickly you may positively impact their organisation.

Think about this, tell them your strengths, be honest about your level of experience and don’t overstate your ability to perform.

Good luck with interviews!
